What is revision liposuction?

Revision liposuction is a secondary procedure used to correct the results of a previous liposuction surgery. The procedure is the same but the level of difficulty is often higher because the area being treated has been treated before.

Liposuction requires skill to sculpt the body proportionately, resulting in asymmetry. An inexperienced doctor may be less skilled or less familiar with liposuction techniques. This can result in unsatisfactory results that will need to be revised with additional cosmetic procedures.

One common reason for revision liposuction is that the treated area or areas were not blended with the surrounding area. There is an abrupt change between the two areas. A doctor may employ a different technique that will blend the areas for a more natural looking appearance.

Revision liposuction is not possible for every patient. In these cases, additional surgeries may not be appropriate for health reasons or too much fat may have been removed. However, uneven fat removal or insufficient fat removal can often be corrected by a skilled revision liposuction specialist.

The revision surgery is performed several months after the initial procedure to give the body time to heal and for the swelling to completely resolve. It often takes many months for the full results of liposuction to become apparent.

It is important for patients to find a doctor that is experienced and skilled in revision liposuction in order to achieve the desired results. Revision liposuction is generally more difficult than surgery on an unaltered patient. Blending or sculpting the body requires precise fat removal.

The revision lipo surgeon will determine if a person is a good candidate for liposuction and whether the the desired results can be achieved. Because liposuction involves body sculpting using the cannula, the surgeon’s skill, experience, and attention to detail all affect the outcome of revision liposuction.
