Revision Abdomen Liposuction

Revision liposuction is the correction of a previous liposuction surgery. People may seek revision abdominal liposuction to remove additional body fat from the abdomen or to reshape it.

Revision liposuction of the abdomen is typically sought for three reasons: if less fat was removed than they desired, if the results were uneven or asymmetrical on each side of the belly, or if the treated areas were not blended well with the rest of the body. In the latter case, there may be an abrupt and noticeable change between the area where fat has been removed and the surrounding tissue where no fat has been removed. If this is the case, more fat may need to be removed to achieve a smooth, invisible transition between the treated and untreated areas.

Uneven or asymmetrical results may occur when a surgeon lacks experience or is not specialized in liposuction surgery. A revision liposuction specialist can often correct a previous surgery, as long as too much fat was not removed. A specialist can determine a patient’s candidacy for revision lipoplasty.

Revision abdominal liposuction is possible if enough fat is left that it can be sculpted properly by a skilled surgeon. Additional fat may need to be removed to make each side of the abdomen symmetrical with the other. A person may also want more fat removed than was removed by a previous surgery.

Tautness is a concern with abdominal liposuction. With the removal of the fat, the skin can tighten itself considerably because of its own natural elasticity.

Revision liposuction of the abdomen is performed the same as the original surgery. A cannula is inserted through small incisions to extract excess fat. The difference is that it can be more challenging to correct another doctor’s work, so it is important that the revision liposuction is performed by a specialist.
